Bringing The Internet & Software into the Classroom

The Internet & Software Assist Teachers

Simulation Support Software

This website allows students to solve complex problems within an online environment.  It is a very insightful approach by national geographic to provide a learning environment in which students learn by making adult decisions.  Geothentic allows students to build on their scaffold by using their own experiences in an active and hands on manner with real life situations (Roblyer and Doering,2013,pg.45).

Drill and Practice Software

The Learning Planet offers a very extensive library of learning activities and educational games.  The math exercises allow learners to have diverse choice in various drill and practice educational games.  It allows students to learn through fun work problems and obtain immediate feedback and grades (Robyler and Doering, 2013, pg. 83).  This type of practice is essential to math because it eliminates the monotony of traditional math daily lessons in the classroom setting.

Tutorial Software

Hippo Campus is a core academic website with a very extensive multimedia collection that offers tutorials and videos for all high school science subjects (NROC, 2103).  It’s very well-funded and offered to the general public (NROC, 2013).  These animations and videos mimic an advanced human tutorial providing all information and instructional activities a high or middle school student requires to master a science topic (Robyler and Doering, 2013, pg.78).  Again not only does it provide an excellent tutorial source, it’s also REGISTER FREE and NO CHARGE.

Support Software Instructional Game

An instructional game that even makes the repition of math enjoyable through the use of drills and simulations.  Math is a subject which requires constant motivation and this site offers many activities which follow a rule in order to produce a sufficient outcome (Robyler and Doering, 2013, pg.90).

Support Software Problem Solving

Memory Challenge assists students solving skills by teaching directly through explanation and practice (Robyler and Doering, 2013, pg.79).  These memory exercises provide various levels of difficulty to ensure adequate problem solving skills are developed by the student.

  1. I think that math can be fun when it is competitive! If a teacher has small groups of two to three students at a time, the students can really be motivated to learn. Like the textbook says, students find entertainment when they know they are playing a game. I wonder how many, if any, schools in Alabama are opposed to instructional games? I wonder if they feel as if this method of learning is not as effective as the traditional learning curriculm?

  2. I thinking using games can be tricky, not everyone likes to play and then you have those who get frustrated because they can not win or feel as if having to compete constantly could be bad for inter-classroom relationships. I do think games would make learning math more fun and have some motivational pull that it normally doesn't have.

  3. I think GeoThentic sounds neat, I'm sure students would be able to tackle a tough subject like geography with this useful simulator.

  4. I do agree Sarah as for as gaming it can get tricky and distracting. Competition and frustration can be distraction from the subject matter. I've always loved math and I think I choose the math gaming software specifically to show how educational games at this point are best suited for math. I'm sure throughout the course and other blogs there educational games that can be extremely effective for all subjects.
